The man who had fallen among thieves and was dying could not get up by himself.

The priest and the Levite avoided him and passed by, but a Samaritan came near and bandaged his wounds. Luke chapters 9–15 convey the mercy of Jesus, who, like this Samaritan, came near to sinners. On the way toward Jerusalem, the Lord taught self-denial and prayer, riches and watchfulness, the narrow gate and the joy of finding the lost. At the foundation of all those words lies the salvation that He accomplished through His resurrection after bearing the sin of the world through the baptism He received from John and receiving its judgment through the blood of the Cross. Receive that mercy of the One who has come near to us, who are unable to add any merit of our own.
